The Alchemist Short Summary

Santiago, a young Andalusian shepherd, dreams of finding treasure near the Egyptian pyramids. He sells his flock and travels to Africa, where he loses all his money to a thief and is forced to work for a crystal merchant to save up again.
Eventually he joins a desert caravan heading toward Egypt, where he meets an Englishman searching for an alchemist and falls in love with a woman named Fatima. Deep in the desert, he encounters the alchemist himself, who teaches him to listen to his heart and read the “Soul of the World.”

After many dangers including being captured by warring tribesmen Santiago finally reaches the pyramids. He digs for treasure but finds nothing. A stranger then beats him and, in a moment of irony, accidentally reveals that the real treasure was buried all along beneath a tree back in the ruined church in Spain where Santiago’s journey began.
He returns home, digs under the tree, and finds the treasure. But more than gold, he has gained wisdom, love, and a deep understanding of his own destiny his “Personal Legend.
The story is essentially about the courage it takes to pursue your dreams, and the idea that the universe conspires to help those who truly seek their purpose.
